Appointments to National Film Board Announced

OTTAWA, June 11, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of two members to the National Film Board.

Susan Heather Abramovitch, of Toronto, has been appointed to the National Film Board for a term of three years. Ms. Abramovitch graduated with an LL.B. from the Faculty of Law of McGill University.

Ms. Abramovitch is a founding partner at Stohn Abramovitch, LLP, and practises entertainment law exclusively. She has experience in all aspects of music industry transactions, as well as in film, television and book publishing. She has previously practised law with the firm Debevoise & Plimpton in both its New York and Paris offices in the areas of telecommunications law, international mergers and acquisitions, and general international corporate transactions.

Ms. Abramovitch has published articles in the Canadian Business Law Journal and the Cahiers de Droit. She has lectured at the Faculty of Law of the University of Toronto, the Osgoode Hall Law School and the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology. She has also served as a panelist at various industry conferences in Canada and abroad and as a commentator on CBC, National Magazine and the National Post. She serves as a director of the Metronome Canada Foundation.

Louise Dompierre, of Toronto, has been appointed to the National Film Board for a three-year term. Ms. Dompierre graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Art History) from Queen's University and a Masters Degree in Canadian Studies and Art History from Carleton University.

From 1980-85, Ms. Dompierre was Associate Director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston and, from 1985 to 1998, she was Associate Director and Chief Curator of the Power Plant Art Gallery in Toronto. Since then, she has been Director of the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

She has taught, lectured and published widely, as well as collaborated, in various curatorial capacities, with a number of art institutions abroad, including the ICC Intercommunication Centre in Tokyo and Queensland Art Gallery in Australia. Ms. Dompierre serves on many committees including the Advisory Council for the Visual Arts of the University of Western Ontario.
