Sheila Copps Congratulates Team Canada's Artistic Medalists at the IV Games of La Francophonie

OTTAWA, July 23, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps congratulated the artists from Team Canada for the medals they won during the IV Games of La Francophonie. Among the eight cultural disciplines presented at this edition of the Games, Team Canada members won four medals.

From singing, storytelling, traditionally-inspired dancing, literature (poetry), painting, photography, sculpture and busking, Team Canada artists offered original presentations and works that impressed the members of the jury. CORPUS (Toronto, Ontario) received a gold medal in busking. Stefan Psenak (Aylmer, Québec) earned a silver medal in literature (poetry). Geneviève Ruest (Ottawa, Ontario) was awarded a bronze medal in photography. Frédéric Pellerin (St-Élie de Caxton, Québec) won bronze in storytelling.

"Our artists presented magnificent works and incredible performances. These young ambassadors were able to demonstrate the importance of arts and culture in Canada and internationally. They made Canadian culture shine throughout the entire Games," said Minister Copps.

"We are doubly proud to have hosted the Games of La Francophonie and to have been so well represented by our team. Canada has international-calibre artists and we are already looking forward to the next Games, which will be held in Niger, in 2005," added the Minister.

The IV Games of La Francophonie, which were held from July 14 to 24 in the Ottawa-Hull region, brought together more than 3,000 artists and athletes from more than 50 member countries and governments of the International Francophonie.
