Sheila Copps Congratulates Team Canada's Record Medal Count in Sports at the IV Games of La Francophonie

OTTAWA, July 24, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today congratulated Team Canada for winning a record-setting 42 medals, 15 gold, 10 silver and 17 bronze in the sport component of the IV Games of La Francophonie.

From athletics to basketball, from beach volleyball to boxing, from football (soccer) to handisport, from judo to table tennis, Team Canada demonstrated the excellence of their training and talent in all areas of competition.

"Team Canada athletes distinguished themselves in all disciplines and are role models for all young Canadians. On behalf of all Canadians I congratulate them on their remarkable performance," said Minister Copps.

Team Canada has proven its excellence by finishing 2nd in the total of medal standings. This is Canada's best showing at the Games of La Francophonie.

The IV Games of La Francophonie, held from July 14 to 24 in the Ottawa-Hull region, brought together more than 3,000 artists and athletes from more than 50 member states and governments of the international Francophonie.
