Don Boudria Announces the Artists who will Represent the Canada Team at the IVth Games of La Francophonie

OTTAWA, March 1, 2001 -- Minister of State, Government House Leader and Chair of the Orientation Committee for the Games of La Francophonie 2001 Don Boudria, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced the Canadian artists who have been chosen to represent the Canada team at the cultural competitions of the Games of La Francophonie to be held in Ottawa-Hull from July 14 to 24.

"I wish to congratulate the young artists who will represent the Canada team at the Games of La Francophonie," said Minister Boudria. "These games are unique in that they bring together sport and cultural competitions, thereby offering artists the opportunity to take part and receive medals in an international event alongside athletes."

"I am delighted by the richness and artistic diversity of our cultural delegation that will participate in this fourth edition of the Games," said Minister Copps. "These Games are a great opportunity to highlight the dynamic qualities and originality of our artists who are a part of La Francophonie around the world."

The artists who will represent the Canada team in the eight official disciplines of the Games, are:

Busking: Corpus of Toronto, Ontario
Song: Polly-Esther, originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Storytelling: Frédéric Pellerin of St-Élie de Caxton, Quebec
Dance: DansEncorps of Moncton, New Brunswick
Painting: Phil Irish of Waterloo, Ontario
Photography: Geneviève Ruest of Ottawa, Ontario
Poetry: Stefan Psenak of Aylmer, Quebec
Sculpture: Amanda Schoppel of Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Fédération culturelle canadienne-française is responsible for the promotion, selection and support of the artists of the Canada team of the IV Games of La Francophonie. These artists were selected in each of the categories based on criteria established by the International Committee of the Games of La Francophonie. The juries were composed of arts and culture professionals from all regions of the country.
The Canadian delegation at the Games is made up of three teams: Canada, Canada-Quebec and Canada-New Brunswick.

In July 2001, more than 600 young Canadians will join the 2,000 artists representing approximately 50 states and governments that are part of La Francophonie around the world to take part in the Games.
