Appointment to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board Announced

OTTAWA, March 15, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Dr. Katherine Pettipas, of Winnipeg, to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

Dr. Pettipas was Curator, Native Ethnology at the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature from 1978-1998. Since 1994, she has been Curator for the Hudson's Bay Company Museum Collection. She is also Advisory Associate Curator, Ethnology at Glenbow Museum in Calgary; an adjunct professor in the department of anthropology at the University of Manitoba; and an ad hoc member of the Rupert's Land Council at the University of Winnipeg.

Dr. Pettipas served as a member of the National Task Force on Museums and First Nations from 1989 to 1991. She also served on the Native Heritage Advisory Committee for the Manitoba Heritage Council. She now advises several Aboriginal communities on developing cultural centres and exhibition facilities and on protecting traditional sacred sites in Manitoba.

Dr. Pettipas' appointment is for a three-year term.
