Minister Copps Announces Appointment to the Canadian Race Relations Foundation

OTTAWA, May 10, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that Sister Andrée Ménard, of Montreal, has been appointed a Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation Board of Directors for a three-year term.

Sister Andrée Ménard founded PROMIS, a multicultural, inter-community and multi-denominational organization that promotes integration of immigrants. She taught violin and piano and did pastoral work in Japan. She worked with the underprivileged and various communities in Japan and the Philippines to improve their lives.

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation was established in 1996 to develop, share and apply knowledge and expertise in the effort to eliminate racism and all forms of racial discrimination in Canada. The Toronto-based Foundation provides a knowledge base from which governments, academia, business, labour and community organizations can draw in developing effective race relations policies and practices. The Foundation also disseminates information to increase public awareness of the importance of eliminating racism.
