The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the British Columbia Orchardist Magazine

VANCOUVER, November 20, 2002 -- Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Vancouver South-Burnaby Herb Dhaliwal, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $16,800 for British Columbia Orchardist, an agriculture industry magazine operating since 1959. The funds will help the magazine raise its profile with the industry and renew its editorial content.

"Canadian magazines are a window on their communities," said Minister Dhaliwal. "They provide information that affects the daily reality of Canadians. This project will enable one of the longest-standing agriculture magazine in British Columbia to increase its visibility in the industry and consolidate its financial viability by attracting additional advertising and new readers."

Since its debut in November 1959, British Columbia Orchardist has been the only magazine covering the tree fruit industry on Canada's west coast and in the northwestern United States. Its goal is to provide a first-class, informative, thought-provoking magazine dedicated to the betterment of the industry.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Support for Business Development for Small Magazine Publishers, a component of the Canada Magazine Fund (CMF). The goal of this program is to encourage the development of stronger and more financially viable small publishing firms, thereby ensuring that Canadian readers have high-quality Canadian choices in the Canadian magazine market.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
