Minister Copps Announces Appointment to the National Gallery of Canada

OTTAWA, November 26, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that Joseph-Richard Veilleux has been appointed as a trustee to the National Gallery of Canada Board of Trustees. The appointment is for a three-year
term.

Mr. Veilleux, of Saint-Georges de Beauce, Quebec, has a profound knowledge of the visual arts. He studied plastic arts, art history and architecture, and holds a Master's degree from the Université Laval in experimental psychology which gave him an opportunity to explore the perception of colours. A recognized and valued artist, Mr. Veilleux has been exhibiting his works for more than 30 years. His work is represented in many private and public collections in Canada, France, the United States, Denmark and Turkey. He was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1997, and member of the Executive Committee of the Academy in 1999.

The National Gallery of Canada develops, maintains and makes known, throughout Canada and internationally, a collection of both historic and contemporary art, with special but not exclusive reference to Canada. It furthers knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of art in general among all Canadians. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography is an affiliated museum.
