HERITAGE DAY

by: Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage

HERITAGE DAY

February 17, 2003 On the occasion of Heritage Day I would like to encourage all Canadians to learn more about their history, cultures and values, to get to know one another better, and to strengthen the bonds that unite us.

Heritage is our living memory. It is our collective treasure, a legacy that we have been given, and that we will leave to generations to come. It is what we care about; it is what carries a deeper meaning for all of us; it is that which enriches the present and the future of our communities.

As Canada becomes more and more diverse, as the recently released 2001 Census data show us, Canadians of all origins contribute to the vitality and richness of our collective heritage.

The Department of Canadian Heritage and its agencies have the mission to celebrate our vast heritage, and to ensure opportunities for all Canadians to participate in the cultural life of our country.

I invite each and every one of us to contribute to our heritage in our own way, just like those who came before us, with the help of thousands of professionals, volunteers, and groups who nourish, preserve, and promote our common heritage in Canada.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I am proud to help you preserve our natural and cultural heritage, which is one of the richest in the world. I invite you to discover all of its beauty and diversity by being a part of Heritage Day and by contributing to its vitality.
