OTTAWA, April 10, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Michèle Alderton, of Red Lake, Ontario, as a trustee to the board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Since 1996, Ms. Alderton has been Director/Curator of the Red Lake Museum. As a Golden City Councillor from 1988 to 1994, she chaired the Golden Heritage and Publicity Committee and played a leading role in preserving historical landmarks and major collections. In 1999, she was appointed for a three-year term to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant Review Panel for Northwestern Ontario. In January 2001, she served on the peer assessment panel of the Museums Assistance Program (Aboriginal Museum Development component) for the Department of Canadian Heritage.

In 1996, she received the Ontario Heritage Foundation Achievement Award for writing a booklet entitled Uncovering our Heritage: An Inventory of the Heritage and Cultural Resources in the Red Lake Region.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is responsible for the management of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliate, the Canadian War Museum. One of the Corporation's key objectives is to enhance understanding of Canada's heritage for current and future generations, thereby instilling a sense of national identity in all Canadians.
