Minister Copps Announces Two Appointments to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board

OTTAWA, April 15, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointments of Jean-Pierre Valentin, of Montreal, and Fela Grunwald, of Toronto, to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

Jean-Pierre Valentin, well-known in the visual arts community, has been the owner and director of the Galerie Jean-Pierre Valentin (formerly named L'Art Français), which features primarly Canadian art, since 1975.

From 1972 to 1975, he worked as a broker in paintings and engravings. In this capacity, he travelled nine months a year to many countries in Europe and North America, as well as to Japan.

From 1977, Mr. Valentin served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Professional Art Dealers Association of Canada until he was elected Chair of this board in 1981. He served in that capacity for two terms. Over the years, Mr. Valentin has evaluated many Canadian works of art for museums, government organizations, associations, businesses, and collectors. He has lectured on subjects such as the art market, art appraisal, the development of an art collection and the identification of counterfeit works of art.

A fine art appraiser since 1982, Ms. Fela Grunwald brings with her many years of management, consulting, and business experience in her area of expertise. She was the owner/director of the Grunwald Gallery from 1980 to 1990, where she represented numerous established and emerging Canadian artists. From 1990 to 1992, she worked as a private dealer/consultant and, from 1992 to 1994, Ms. Grunwald was a managing partner of the Genereux Grunwald Gallery, a contemporary Canadian art gallery. In 1994, she started her own company offering her services as a fine arts consultant to public, private, and corporate clients.

Over the years, Ms. Grunwald has participated on juries, panels and as a lecturer for a number of art organizations. She has been involved on the boards of many cultural and community organizations. Some of her current and past involvements include serving on the Cultural Industries Sector Advisory Group on International Trade, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and the Professional Art Dealers Association of Canada, where, as former President, she oversaw approximately 1,900 appraisals per year of works donated to a number of museums and charitable organizations.

The Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board determines if cultural property is of "outstanding significance and national importance" pursuant to the Cultural Property Export and Import Act; it also determines, for income tax purposes, the fair market value of objects donated to custodial institutions such as museums, art galleries, libraries, and archives; and to hear appeals from applicants whose export permits for significant cultural property are refused.
