Minister Copps Announces an Appointment to Telefilm Canada

TOTTAWA, April 15, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Trina McQueen as a member of Telefilm Canada.

Trina McQueen began her career as a reporter at the Ottawa Journal, then as the first woman to co-host CTV's public affairs program W-5 and, later, became the first woman reporter hired by CFTO-TV.

Ms. McQueen joined CBC in 1968 and, during 25 years, served in many capacities including on-air reporter, executive producer of The National and News Specials, Network Director for the English Program and Vice-President of Television News, Current Affairs and Newsworld. In 1993, she moved to a private sector organization, Netstar, where she played a leadership role in launching the Discovery Channel.

In 1999, Ms. McQueen returned to CTV as Executive Vice-President responsible for programming, sales and administration for its broadcast operations and, later, became President and Chief Operating Officer. Currently retired, she has been involved on the boards of many organizations including the Banff Television Foundation, the Canadian Television Fund and Historica.

Ms. McQueen is the recipient of many honours and awards including the Crystal Award from Canadian Women in Film and Television, the Woman of the Year Award from Canadian Women in Communications, and the A.D. Dunton Award from Carleton University. In 2002, Trina McQueen was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters.

As a cultural investor, Telefilm Canada is primarily concerned with the funding of original, diverse and high-quality productions that reflect Canada's linguistic duality and cultural diversity and that are intended for the cinema, new media, radio and television. Telefilm Canada accordingly supports productions with a high level of Canadian content. Telefilm Canada also fosters the broadest possible dissemination of Canadian productions at home and abroad. Telefilm Canada therefore seeks to be a leading promoter, fostering the development of a Canadian audiovisual industry of international calibre.
