Minister Copps announces two appointments to the Canadian Museum of Civilization

OTTAWA, November 7, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointments of Claudette Roy, of Edmonton, as Chairperson, and Pierre Dufour, of Gatineau, as Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Prior to becoming the Chairperson of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Board of Trustees, Ms. Roy served as Vice-Chairperson since 1998 and as trustee since 1995.

Ms. Roy, an educator by profession, spent most of her career teaching in French immersion and French first language schools. She has played an active role in many committees at the local, provincial and national levels. Some of her current and past involvements include being the Chairperson of the parents' committee whose efforts contributed to the establishment of the first Francophone public school in Edmonton, a member of the provincial Minister of Education's Task Force which led to the creation of Francophone school boards in Alberta, and, more recently, a member of the Edmonton 2004 Celebration Committee.

Ms. Roy is a Member of the Order of Canada and the recipient of many honours and prizes, including the Prix Maurice-Lavallée in recognition of her work in promoting French first language education.

Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chairperson of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Board of Trustees, Mr. Dufour was a trustee since 1995.

A lawyer by profession since 1966, Mr. Dufour is currently senior partner with Dufour, Isabelle, Leduc, Bouthillette, Lapointe, Beaulieu in Gatineau. Mr. Dufour has been involved with a number of professional and community organizations. Some of his current and past involvements include being a member of the Board of Governors of the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de l'Outaouais, a Board member of the Barreau de Hull, and a Board member of the Fondation du Pavillon du Parc, a hospital for persons with physical and mental disabilities.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is responsible for the management of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliate, the Canadian War Museum. One of the Corporation's key objectives is to enhance understanding of Canada's heritage for current and future generations, thereby instilling a sense of national identity in all Canadians.
