Minister Chalifour Scherrer congratulates Denys Arcand and Howard Shore for their Oscar wins

OTTAWA, March 1, 2004 -- The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today congratulated Canadians Denys Arcand and Howard Shore, who were awarded Oscars at the 76th annual Academy Awards presentation in Hollywood, on February 29.

Mr. Arcand was awarded the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category for The Barbarian Invasions. Mr. Shore received Oscars for Best Music (Score) and Best Music (Song) for The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

"An Oscar nomination is an exceptional honour, and those who win this award are truly deserving of congratulations and applause," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "I am very proud of our Canadian artists. They act as Canadian ambassadors to the world, and their talent contributes to the success of the Canadian film industry, at home and abroad."

Minister Chalifour Scherrer also took the opportunity to congratulate other Canadian film artists who received Oscar nominations, including Chris Hinton, for Best Short Film (Animated) for the film Nibbles, and Benoît Charest, for Best Music (Song) for The Triplets of Belleville.

These prestigious awards are evidence of the incredible talent of Canadian artists, who continue to make a name for themselves on the international stage. Canadian film has had an excellent year, with its market share increasing to 3.6 percent, up from 1.4 percent in 2001.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is proud to have supported these productions through Telefilm Canada, a federal cultural agency dedicated primarily to the development and promotion of the Canadian film, television, new media, and music industries.
