Budget 2004 restores CTF funding

OTTAWA, March 23, 2004 -- The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today confirmed the government's decision to restore funding to the Canadian Television Fund of $100 million per year for the next two years. The Budget includes $37.5 million to be added to the previously announced $62.5M for the upcoming fiscal year, and $100M for 2005-2006.

"This announcement confirms our commitment to Canada's television production industry," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "This is a clear affirmation of the CTF's importance and success."

The Minister added that since 1996 the government's investment in the Fund has levered investment from the private sector and generated nearly $5 billion worth of quality Canadian programming.

"We plan to work with the industry to improve the governance structure of the Fund,"
added the Minister. "The CTF is a key instrument for the development of quality Canadian programming."

Since its inception in 1996, the CTF has supported more than 3,000 projects that created more than16,300 hours of new programming.
