Ian E. Wilson Appointed Librarian and Archivist of Canada
OTTAWA, September 23, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Ian E. Wilson as Librarian and Archivist of Canada.Mr. Wilson will now head Library and Archives Canada, which was created in May 2004 when Bill C-8 received royal proclamation. This new institution combines the collections, services and staff expertise of the former National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada. Mr. Wilson was appointed Interim Librarian and Archivist of Canada at the time of proclamation.
Mr. Wilson was appointed National Archivist of Canada in July 1999. During his career, he has been Archivist of Ontario (1986-1999) and Saskatchewan's Provincial Archivist (1976-1986). He has served as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculties of Information Studies and Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto and as a member of the Ontario Government's Information and Information Technology Management Committee. For several years, he was also responsible for the Ontario Public Library system.
In 2002, Mr. Wilson was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2003, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists and appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Government of France. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters (D. Litt) by York University in 2001.
