Minister Frulla announces appointment of Veronica Tennant to the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre Corporation

OTTAWA, October 26, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Veronica Tennant as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre (NAC) Corporation.

As Prima Ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada for 25 years, Veronica Tennant performed every major classical role, as well as major roles in several ballets choreographed on her dramatic talents. Since her farewell performance in 1989, Ms. Tennant has worked in theatre and film. A gifted communicator, she has earned an enviable reputation as narrator, actor, broadcaster, and lecturer. As a television writer, director, and producer, she has received several awards, including the International Emmy Award for Karen Kain: Dancing in the Moment.

"Ms. Tennant not only enriched the artistic community as an extraordinary dancer, but also has continued to give back to the performing arts through her distinguished broadcasting career, and as a dedicated volunteer on several performing arts committees," said Minister Frulla.

Now an Adjunct Professor of Dance at York University, Ms. Tennant is also Canada's national Ambassador for UNICEF and has served on the board of directors of numerous arts organizations, including the Ontario Arts Council, the National Ballet of Canada, the Glenn Gould Foundation, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, and the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation.

The recipient of the 2004 Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts and the 2004 Governor General's Performing Arts Award for lifetime achievement, Ms. Tennant was also appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1975 and, in 2004, was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada.

The NAC Corporation is a federal cultural organization dedicated primarily to developing and showcasing the performing arts in the National Capital Region and across Canada. Home to the acclaimed National Arts Centre Orchestra, the NAC is a multi-disciplinary performing arts centre that features classical music, dance, English-language theatre, French-language theatre, variety shows, and community programming. The NAC co-produces with other organizations throughout the country, hosts festivals, and, through the media and its international tours, reaches out to audiences across Canada and around the world.
