Minister Frulla Announces Appointment to the Canada Council for the Arts

OTTAWA, November 29, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Tom Hill, of Ohsweken, Ontario, as a member of the Canada Council for the Arts.

"I am pleased that Tom Hill has accepted this challenge," said Minister Frulla. "I believe that his vast experience and his knowledge of the arts will make him a devoted member of the Council."

Over the past 30 years, Mr. Hill has held several important positions in the arts sector. As a curator, writer, art historian, volunteer and artist, he played a defining role in the development of aboriginal visual arts. He is currently Museum Director at the Woodland Cultural Centre near Brantford.

A member of the Konadaha Seneca band, Mr. Hill studied at the Ontario College of Art; he also has a Certificate in Museum Studies from the Ontario Museums Association. After his involvement in the Indians of Canada Pavilion at Expo 67, he went on to become the first aboriginal art curator in Canada.

A contributor to countless committees and boards, he has also lectured and written extensively. Among his many awards is an honorary doctorate from Wilfrid Laurier University. In early 2004, Mr. Hill won the 2004 Governor General's award in visual and media arts.

The Canada Council for the Arts is a national arm's-length agency which fosters the expansion of the arts in Canada through grants, services, and awards to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations, as well as administering scholarly awards. It has under its aegis the Public Lending Right Commission and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The Council reports its activities to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage.
