Government of Canada Supports the Redwire Native Youth Media SocietyVANCOUVER, December 16, 2004 -- The Honourable Stephen Owen Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport) and Member of Parliament (Vancouver Quadra), on behalf of the Honourable Liza Frulla Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, today announced $21,682 in funding for the Redwire Native Youth Media Society. The funds will enable the organization to establish Awake.com, a contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture Web site and e-zine."Awake.com gives emerging Aboriginal artists and performers an opportunity to promote their talent throughout British Columbia and around the world," said Minister Owen. "These creators deserve our recognition, and I am pleased that this Web site will showcase their work." "Thanks to the Internet, our artists' works will be better known beyond our borders", said Minister Frulla. "Sites like Awake.com are precious tools for promoting our culture among people of all ages and are exceptional gateways for our creators." The Web site will feature Web logs, artists' works and their resumés. The quarterly Aboriginal arts and culture e-zine will present articles on diverse events, new trends, networks, and Aboriginal arts and cultural services. Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Gateway Fund of its Canadian Culture Online strategy, which encourages a uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet. Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
