Minister Frulla Announces Additional Funding of $5 Million for the Canada New Media Fund

OTTAWA, February 3, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced an increase of $5 million to the Canada New Media Fund, bringing the Government's support for 2005Ñ2006 to $14 million. Minister Frulla made the announcement today at the Canadian Film and Television Production Association's annual conference.

"The Canada New Media Fund is an important part of many success stories and has fostered the creation of innovative products," said Minister Frulla. "The Government of Canada is proud to encourage this thriving industry."

Telefilm Canada administers the Canada New Media Fund. The Fund provides support for market research in new media, online distribution of original new media products, promotion in both domestic and international markets of designers in this sector, and professional development.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has allocated approximately $9 million annually to the Canada New Media Fund since 2001Ñ2002. The additional funds demonstrate the Government's recognition of the important role played by the new media sector in producing and promoting Canadian cultural content.
