Minister Frulla Announces Appointment to the Canadian Museum of Civilization

OTTAWA, February 07, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Patricia Roy, of British Columbia, as a part-time member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

"Ms. Roy is not only passionate about history; she is very familiar with the museums sector. I am certain that her experience and her knowledge will greatly benefit the Canadian Museum of Civilization," said Minister Frulla.

A professor in the History Department at the University of Victoria, Patricia Roy has focussed on the history of Chinese and Japanese immigrants who came to British Columbia in the last two centuries. Ms. Roy has written many books on this subject, including The Oriental Question: Consolidating a White Man's Province, published in 2003.

In 2000, Ms. Roy served as a consultant in the design of the Canadian Museum of Civilization's Chinese Exhibition. More recently, she played a role in the development of the new Canadian War Museum, now under construction in Ottawa.

Ms. Roy has received the Charles Gates Memorial Award, which is presented by the Washington State Historical Society. Last year, she received the George Ryga Award for her social commitment in British Columbia.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is the Crown Corporation responsible for managing the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliated museum, the Canadian War Museum, as well as the Virtual Museum of New France. One of the Corporation's most important objectives is to foster greater appreciation among Canadians of their shared heritage.
