OTTAWA, February 7, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister Responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Corinne Mount Pleasant-Jetté, of Ville St. Laurent, Quebec, to the Board of Trustees of the Canada Science and Technology Museum.

A member of the Tuscarora First Nation, Professor Mount Pleasant-Jetté has been an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University since 1979. She has conducted research and written various texts on Aboriginal issues for numerous government agencies and organizations for more than 25 years. She was also a contributor to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.

"Professor Mount Pleasant-Jetté's experience as an academic and a researcher and her commitment to the community make her a valuable asset for the Museum," said Minister Frulla.

Professor Mount Pleasant-Jetté is a member of the Board of Directors of La Maison Waseskun House, a half-way house for male ex-offenders, and Past President of the Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations. She is a former Chair of the National Standing Committee on Education of the Council for the Advancement of Native Economic Development Officers and a former interim Executive Director of the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal. In addition, she founded the Native Access to Engineering Program at Concordia University.

In recognition of her involvement in the community, Professor Mount Pleasant-Jetté has been awarded the Order of Canada (1992), the 125th Anniversary of Confederation Medal (1992), the YWCA Women of Distinction Award (1995), and the Queen's Jubilee Medal (2002).

In 2002, Professor Mount Pleasant-Jetté was appointed Chair of the National Working Group on First Nations Education.
