OTTAWA, March 10, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today proposed the reappointment of Dr. Victor Rabinovitch as Director of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. The proposed reappointment will be referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage for review.

"Dr. Rabinovitch has led the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation brilliantly for nearly five years," said Minister Frulla. "His leadership and his wide experience within the public service will continue to be a great asset for this organization."

Dr. Rabinovitch was originally appointed Director of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation in April 2000. Prior to that, he was Assistant Deputy Minister, Income Security Programs, at Human Resources Development Canada. From 1995 to 1998, he served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Cultural Development and Heritage, at Canadian Heritage, where he led the departmental team responsible for the modernization of the Copyright Act.

Dr. Rabinovitch began his federal public service career in 1982 as a member of the Task Force on Atlantic Fisheries. He subsequently became an Assistant Deputy Minister at Fisheries and Oceans, where he was responsible for the efforts by Canada to stop foreign overfishing.

Before joining the federal public service, Dr. Rabinovitch specialized in labour issues, serving as National Secretary for Workplace Health and Safety with the Canadian Labour Congress from 1978 to 1982. From 1976 to 1978, he served as Executive Director, Manitoba Department of Labour.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is the Crown Corporation responsible for managing the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliated museum, the Canadian War Museum, as well as the Virtual Museum of New France. One of the Corporation's objectives is to make Canadians of today and tomorrow aware of their heritage and to strengthen their sense of national identity.
