Minister Frulla Announces Three Appointments to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

OTTAWA, April 26, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced three appointments to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Yasmin Jivraj, of Edmonton, Alberta; K. (Rai) Sahi, of Mississauga, Ontario; and Johanne Brunet, of Montréal, Quebec have been appointed as part-time members.

"The CBC is definitely the beneficiary in having three individuals with such varied and extensive backgrounds join its Board of Directors. I am certain each of them will have much to contribute to the future development of the CBC," said Minister Frulla.

Ms. Jivraj is currently President of Acrodex and has more than 25 years' experience in the area of information technology. In 1988, she co-founded Atlas Systems Group, an information systems and management consulting company. Atlas Systems later merged with CompCanada and, in 2001, became Acrodex. Ms. Jivraj's business portfolio includes Acrodex, Axcend India, Axcend Global Partners, Arcspan, and Khazana.

In 1999, Ms. Jivraj was featured as one of Canada's 100 Women Entrepreneurs by Chatelaine magazine. She volunteers on the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation and the Board of Directors of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. She is also Past Vice-President for the Edmonton Section of the Canadian Information Processing Society.

Mr. Sahi is currently Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Morguard Corporation and is a director of Morguard Corporation, Morguard Investments Limited, Morguard Residential Inc., Tri-White Corporation, Clearlink Coporation, and Revenue Properties Company Limited. His is also Chair of ClubLink Corporation and a trustee of Morguard REIT.

Mr. Sahi has an extensive business background in transportation and industrial enterprises, having invested in such companies as Consolidated Fastfrate, Kingsway Transport Group, Acklands Limited, and Carquest Canada.

He was named the Turnaround Entrepreneur of the Year in 1994. He is also a director of the Council for Canadian Unity.

Ms. Brunet has been teaching at HEC Montréal since 2003. In 2005, she became a professor, specializing in marketing. From 2001 to 2003, she was Executive Vice-President and Associate of Distraction Formats, a company involved in buying and selling production formats in more than 50 countries. She was Senior Vice-President of TV-5 Americas from 1999 to 2001, responsible for operations and planning in Canada, the United States, and South America.

From 1983 to 1998, Ms. Brunet worked at Société Radio-Canada in several positions, including Director of Outside Productions and Acquisitions (1993-1998), Chief of ProductionÑ Youth Programming (1990-1993), Director of Planning and Administration (1985-1990), Chief of Staff of the President (1984-1985), and Administration Officer of Radio Programming (1983-1984). She also worked for the CBC as Chief of Human Resources (1981-1983), Television News Director (1981), and News Director (1979-1981). Ms. Brunet worked for the SRC/CBC in Vancouver as Assistant to the Regional Director (1977-1979) and Accountant (1976-1977).

Ms. Brunet has served as Vice-President and Administrator of the Academy of International Management, in London, England and as Administrator and Director of Poles Production and Communications in England. She was a member of the Advisory Board of Fairfax University.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is the country's largest cultural institution. The CBC operates two national television networks, four national radio networks, specialty television services, various Internet sites and an international shortwave radio service. The CBC is the only cultural institution and the only broadcaster offering services to all Canadians in English and French across Canada, and in eight Aboriginal languages across the North.
