Government of Canada Provides Financial Support to the International Indigenous Youth Conference 2005

VANCOUVER, June 17, 2005 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, P.C., Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, on behalf of the Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, today announced $20,000 in funding for the Redwire Native Youth Media Society. The funds will help the Society to organize the International Indigenous Youth Conference (IIYC).

"It is not everyday that Aboriginal young people from every province and territory across Canada have an opportunity to gather in one place to discuss the issues that affect them," said Dr. Fry. "I am pleased that our Government can help support this Conference, which will also be attended by Indigenous young people from other parts of the world"

"We are proud to be part of this Forum, which allow young Canadians to share their ideas and visions with one another and with their international peers," said Minister Frulla.

The International Indigenous Youth Conference will be held from June 17 to 21 in Vancouver and promises to attract more than 200 Indigenous participants from across Canada and other parts of the world. Founded in 2002, the Redwire Native Youth Media Society is a non-profit organization by, for, and about Aboriginal young people to create open forums for discussion.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Exchanges Canada Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
