Minister Frulla Announces Appointment to the National Capital Commission

OTTAWA, September 1, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of James S. Yamashita, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, as a part-time member of the National Capital Commission.

"I am certain that Mr. Yamashita, who has extensive experience in real estate development, will have a very positive impact on the National Capital Commission," said Minister Frulla.

Mr. Yamashita, an architect by profession, has been Principal-Director of Practice with Smith Carter since 1993. From 1968 to 1992, he was a partner with IKOY. His specific expertise and vast experience lie in: real estate development for various projects in both Canada and the United States; site acquisition; feasibility analysis; financing; leasing; maintenance; and operations.

Mr. Yamashita is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada College of Fellows, and a is member of professional associations and boards, including provincial associations of Architects in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia. He was also a Lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, at the University of Manitoba, from 1986 to 1998.

The National Capital Commission plans and controls the use of federal lands in the National Capital Region, and promotes the role of the Government of Canada within the region. It emphasizes Canada's unique federal character, official languages, and heritage by promoting activities that enrich the cultural and social fabric of Canada. It also works to make the Capital a meeting place for all Canadians, and safeguards the Capital for future generations by developing and managing its real property assets.
