OTTAWA, November 24, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Patricia Bovey, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, as a part-time member of the National Gallery of Canada Board of Trustees.

"Ms. Bovey has had an impressive and extensive career in the arts field, having worked at some of the country's leading art institutions," said Minister Frulla. "She has much to contribute to the National Gallery of Canada Board of Trustees and I am pleased she has accepted this appointment."

Ms. Bovey was director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery from 1999 to 2004, where she was involved in presenting regional, national, and international exhibitions, including many major touring exhibitions. She was director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, from 1980 to 1999, and curator of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, from 1970 to 1980. From 1974 to 1980, she worked at the University of Winnipeg as curator of art, assistant professor (History of Modern Art), and lecturer (Art History).

Ms. Bovey has served as a member of the Fine Arts Advisory Committee of Sheridan College since 1997. She has held several senior positions with the Emily Carr Institute of Arts and Design (1982–1990). She has been a member of the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation since 2003. She has also served as a jury member for the Department of Canadian Heritage Museum Assistance Program, the Government of Canada Indemnification Program, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the National Museums of Canada.

Among the awards Ms. Bovey has received during her career are the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal (2003), the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada (1993), and the YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture (2002).

The National Gallery of Canada Corporation is responsible for the management of the National Gallery of Canada and its affiliate, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. It develops, maintains, and promotes, throughout Canada and internationally, a collection of both historic and contemporary art with special, but not exclusive, reference to Canada. It furthers knowledge, understanding, and enjoyment of art in general among all Canadians.
