The Minister of Canadian Heritage Announces Appointments

OTTAWA, November 13, 1996 The Minister of Canadian Heritage announced the following appointments to boards of agencies within her portfolio:

Richard Alway as Chair of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Dr. Alway is currently President and Vice-Chancellor of St. Michael's College at The University of Toronto, a position he has held since 1990, and is Chair of the C.D. Howe Memorial Foundation. In the past fifteen years, Dr. Alway was a Member of the Boards of the National Museums of Canada and the National Postal Museum, the Chair of the National Gallery of Canada and the Chair and C.E.O. of the Ontario Heritage Foundation.

William F.W. Neville as a Member of the Board of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. After obtaining a Master's degree from Oxford University, Mr. Neville became a founding member of the Canadian Studies Programme at Trent University. Since 1982, he has served as Assistant to the President of the University of Manitoba and, since 1989, as Director of the University of Manitoba International. Mr. Neville is also involved with the Manitoba Heritage Council and, in 1989, received the Heritage Winnipeg Distinguished Service Award.

Rosemarie Landry as a Member of the Board of The National Arts Centre. Ms. Landry earned a Bachelor degree in piano from The University of Montreal and a Master's degree in voice from Laval University. She has conducted master classes worldwide, and has taught at the Universities of Toronto, Ottawa and Moncton, and the Canadian Opera Company. Among her many awards, Ms. Landry was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1990 and Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France) in 1995.

Dean Brinton as a Member of the Board of the Canada Council. Mr. Brinton is the Executive Director of Début Atlantic Society, and is a faculty member and project associate of the Banff Centre for Management. A graduate of the Universities of Calgary (B.A.) and Toronto (M.A.), Mr. Brinton is Treasurer and past-president of the Board of Directors of the Performing Arts Sponsors Organization of Nova Scotia, as well as Director of its planning and policy, personnel, search and fundraising committees.

Claudette Lizotte as a Member of the Board of the Canada Council. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce from the University of Moncton and enjoys a career in property management. Ms. Lizotte has a range of community involvement, including planning and economic development activities with the Corporation du centre-ville de Shippagan.

Riki Turofsky as a Member of the Board of the Canada Council. A soprano, Ms. Turofsky made her operatic début in 1970 and has sung with virtually every symphony in Canada and numerous international orchestras. She has frequently appeared on radio and television as a performer and a host/interviewer for various programs. Ms. Turofsky has been involved in the performing arts community for over twenty years, and is an active member of the Board of Trustees of the Arts Foundation of Greater Toronto.
Roger Légaré as General Manager of the National Capital Commission. After a thirty-year career with Bell Canada, Mr. Légaré founded and implemented, in partnership with the private sector, the bilingual Executive Master's in Business Administration program at the University of Ottawa. Mr. Légaré has served on boards of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Montfort Hospital Foundation, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Foundation, the Eastern Ontario Development Corporation, le Regroupement des gens d'affaires de l'Outaouais, and as Chair of the first French Catholic School Board in Ottawa-Carleton.

Joan O'Neill elevated from Member to Vice-Chair of the National Capital Commission. Ms. O'Neill served as City Councillor (1985-1994), as Deputy Mayor of Ottawa and as a Commissioner for Ottawa Hydro. In 1995, she implemented the National Packaging Protocol Action Plan on behalf of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Irving Schwartz as a Member of the National Capital Commission. Mr. Schwartz is founder and president of Schwartz and Company Limited, a furniture retail business with eleven outlets across Atlantic Canada. He is also the Director of the Nova Scotia Business Capital Corporation, Advisor at the School of Business at Dalhousie University, President-elect (Nova Scotia Division) of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and is the founding vice-president of Junior Achievement of Cape Breton. Mr. Schwartz has also been active with the University College of Cape Breton, the Children's Aid Society and the Canada Winter Games.

Ian Christie Clark reappointed as Chair of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board. Mr. Clark has long been involved with this board, having served from 1974 to 1977 as Special Advisor to the Secretary of State in preparing and implementing the Cultural Property Export and Import Act. In 1977, he became Founding Chair of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board, and continued to serve as Advisor from 1978 until 1992. From 1983-87, he was the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Canada to UNESCO in Paris. Mr. Clark also served as President of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1990 to 1994.

Roy Piovesana as a Trustee on the Board of the Canadian Museum of Nature. A graduate of Lakehead University with a Master's degree of Arts (History), Mr. Piovesana has been a professor and History Department head at Hammarskjold High School in Thunder Bay since 1984. He has been involved with the Old Fort William Advisory Board, the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, and is currently Chair of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society's New Museum Campaign.

Réjane Sanschagrin as a Trustee on the Board of The National Gallery of Canada. Ms. Sanschagrin has been a self-taught professional artist since 1971 dedicated solely to painting and was the subject of a Radio-Canada program. Ms. Sanschagrin's work may be found in private and public collections both in Canada and abroad.

Sara Vered as a Trustee on the Board of The National Gallery of Canada. Ms. Vered has been involved with various cultural institutions, including the Friends of the National Gallery and the Royal Ontario Museum, and has given lectures on art for various cultural organizations. A graduate of Carleton University, Ms. Vered is currently the executive director of an Ottawa-based engineering and construction company.
