Consultations on Future Role of National Archives and National Library Announced

OTTAWA, March 12, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the launch of a consultation on the role of the National Archives and the National Library. This consultation will be headed by Dr. John English, Professor of History at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. English will consult on several key issues including the structure of the two institutions, how they can help position Canada in the context of the rapidly evolving information highway, how they can help preserve and provide access to the collective memory of the country, and how to enhance the Government of Canada's role and responsibilities for information management.

"It is important for our national institutions to preserve Canada's heritage and to ensure that we are properly positioned for the information age of the 21st century," said Minister Copps. "This consultation should enable the National Archives and the National Library to tackle these challenges."

Consultations will be undertaken with stakeholders across the country. In addition, the search for a new National Archivist will proceed as soon as the consultation is completed.
