Canadian Government Takes Concrete Steps to Support the Multimedia and Internet Industry

MONTREAL, May 7, 1998 -- The Government of Canada plans to take full advantage of its participation in the Multimedia and Info-highways International Market (M.I.M.), by offering companies in the industry concrete assistance.

A new Web site is being created, containing complete information about federal assistance programs available for the industry. Visitors to
http://www.multimediacanada.gc.ca will find information about employment, small and medium business, export assistance programs, support for artists and performers, and even business strategy and tax information. The site will be on-line in time for the official opening of M.I.M. on May 13, 1998.

At the M.I.M., which takes place May 13-15 at the Montreal Convention Centre, the Government of Canada will have a booth representing all the federal departments and agencies with services to offer the multimedia and Internet industries. Consultants will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. A number of federal multimedia accomplishments will also be on display.

"Canadian Content" is the theme of a series of three panel discussions organized by the Canadian government specifically for the multimedia industry. Numerous speakers will take turns presenting their opinions on the following topics:

"Copyright and Multimedia Production: Towards a New Partnership";
"Towards an Access Strategy for Crown-held Works";
"Art and Industry".

The creation of http://www.multimediacanada.gc.ca and significant involvement in
M.I.M. 98 are concrete steps indicating the Canadian government's desire to contribute to business development in this industry. They are also means for the federal government to meet industry needs more effectively, thus accentuating the development of Canadian content.
