Copps Announces Appointments

OTTAWA, June 18, 1998 -- Minister of Canadien Heritage Sheila Copps today announced several appointments to boards of agencies under her portfolio.

TELEFILM CANADA

Laurier L. LaPierre of Ottawa, has been appointed Chair of Telefilm Canada. He has been a member of the Canadian Film Development Corporation since 1997, and for almost 20 years was a history teacher at the University of Western Ontario. He was also Director and General Secretary of the French Canadian Studies program at McGill University. Mr. LaPierre worked as a broadcaster for CKVU-TV and hosted many programs on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, in which he also served as principal writer.

Bluma Appel of Toronto, has been appointed Member of the Board of Telefilm Canada. She has worked as a television host on programs such as "Let's Find Out" and "Bluma Appel Interviews." She has been a theatre and film consultant and producer. Over the years she has served on the boards of numerous organizations such as the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, the Canadian Centre for Advanced Film Studies and the Ontario Crafts Council.

Ronald S. Bremner of Calgary, has been appointed Member of the Board of Telefilm Canada. He began his broadcasting career as a National Sales Representative in 1972, progressing to President and Chief Executive Officer of BCTV in 1990. He has served in various positions on the boards of organizations such as Chairman of the Television Board of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and Chairman of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. Mr. Bremner is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of the Calgary Flames Hockey Club.

The three appointments to Telefilm Canada are for five-year terms.

CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

François Colbert of Montreal, has been Vice-Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts since 1995, and has been reappointed to the same position for a one-year term. He serves on the board of directors of several cultural organizations including the Canadian Association of Arts Administration Educators. Mr. Colbert is a Professor of Marketing at the École des Hautes Études commerciales de Montréal, where he has taught since 1973.

Max Wyman of Vancouver, has been a Member of the Canada Council for the Arts since 1995, and has been reappointed to the same position for a two-year term. A specialist in modern dance, ballet, dance history and an arts critic, he is currently editor in chief of the Saturday Review (Vancouver Sun). He has written several books on dance in Canada and his works have been published in most dance publications in the country.

Suzanne Rochon-Burnett of Welland, has been appointed Member of the Board for a three-year period. She is a broadcaster, businesswoman and advocate for the cause of the Métis and First Nations. She is currently the President of R.B. Communications (CHOW Radio) and President of Kakekalanicks Inc., an art consulting firm she founded to promote the work of Native artists. Currently she is deputy chairperson of the Canadian Council for Native Business and a member of the Board of Trustees of Brock University.

Nalini Stewart of Toronto, has been appointed Member of the Board for a three-year term. She is a freelance journalist who has written for publications such as Maclean's, Toronto Life and the Toronto Star. She has also been Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson of the Ontario Arts Council and has been associated with organizations such as the Toronto International Film Festival, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Ontario Arts Council Foundation and the National Theatre School.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA

Vivienne Poy of Don Mills, has been appointed Trustee of the Board of the National Gallery for a three-year term. She is currently Chairman of Lee Tak Wai Holdings Limited, President of Vivienne Poy Enterprises Ltd., President of Caylan Publishing Ltd. and Proprietor of Vivienne Poy Beauty Products. She has been involved with many organizations such as the University of Toronto, Famous People Players and the Capital Campaign Committee of the Ford Performing Arts Centre, the Ontario Art Gallery and the Canadian Stage Company.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Gail Maureen Yenta Beck of Ottawa, has been appointed Trustee of the Board of the Museum for a period of three years. Dr. Yenta Beck has a consultation practice and therapy practice and is a medical consultant at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. She also has a community practice as a child psychiatrist at Arden Court Children's Residence. She has been involved in many organizations such as the Board of Directors of the Opera Lyra Ottawa, the Central Choir of the Ottawa Board of Education, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, the Canadian Medical Association and the Federation of Medical Women of Canada.

Jacques F. Brunelle of St. Jean sur Richelieu, has been appointed Trustee of the Board for a three-year term. He is a professional engineer who has worked for Canadian Westinghouse, Bell Canada, Brunelle, Lambert and Associates as well as Jacques Lambert and Associates Inc. He is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, the Association of Consulting Engineers of Quebec, the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada.


NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE

Carole McDougall of Halifax, has been appointed Member of the Board for a period of three years. She is a communications and public affairs specialist and has been a social services councillor, a teacher and administrative officer. She is currently working as an Event Manager and Communications Project Manager. She has been involved in many community organizations such as the Halifax YMCA Board of Trustees, the Canadian Parents for French National Board of Directors, Chairperson of the Atlantic Area Council of the YMCA, and Chairperson of the New Neptune Theatre Communications Committee.
