Copps Announces Appointments to the CBC

OTTAWA, September 23, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced appointments to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The appointments include:

W. Thomas R. Wilson, of Toronto, has been reappointed to the boardfor a four-year term. Mr. Wilson has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1993. He joined the law firm of Weir and Foulds as an associate in 1969 and became a partner in 1974. He currently practices as a commercial solicitor for private corporations and public institutions in the real estate industry. In 1996, he was appointed President and CEO of Aquarium Adventures Inc. in Toronto. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

John Kim Bell, of Toronto, has been appointed to the Board for a three-year term. Mr. Bell is the Founder and President of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, which was created in 1985 as a nationally registered charity to provide financial assistance to Aboriginal people to pursue education and training in arts, business and sciences. A well-known conductor, producer, composer and administrator, Mr. Bell has been involved in many productions in cultural fields. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997.

Michelle Courchesne, of Laval-sur-le-Lac, has been appointed to the Board for a three-year term. In the early stages of her professional career, she was employed with Gendron and Lefebvre Inc., the City of Laval and the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs. In 1988, she was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister of the Cultural Sector of the Quebec Department of Cultural Affairs. Ms. Courchesne served as Deputy Minister of the Quebec Department of Culture and Communications from 1991 to 1995. She has been Director General of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra since 1995. She is a member of the Professional Corporation of Urban Planners, Governor of the Montreal Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the National Film Board.

James Simpson Palmer, of Calgary, has been appointed to the Board for a three-year term. Mr. Palmer is a lawyer and Chairman of the Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer law firm. He has been Chancellor of the University of Calgary, President of the Calgary Philharmonic Society, a member of the Alberta Law Foundation and a member of Westcoast Energy Inc.
