Copps Announces Appointments to Boards

OTTAWA, October 1, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced appointments to several agencies within her portfolio. These include:

Darlene Mandeville, of Yellowknife, has been appointed to the board of the National Capital Commission for a three-year term. Ms. Mandeville currently owns and manages Prestige Planning, a special event planning and management service for territorial, national and international events. Prior to this, Ms. Mandeville worked for the Government of the Northwest Territories and founded Top of the World Travel.

Louise B. Vaillancourt, of Montreal, has been appointed to the board of the National Arts Centre for a three-year term. Currently Governor of the Hôpital Marie-Enfant, in Montreal, she also serves on the boards of Air Canada, the National Bank of Canada and the Clinical research Institute of Montreal. She has also served on boards of the Institut Armand-Frappier, the Université du Québec and the Council for Canadian Unity.

Roberto Dante Martella, of Toronto, has been appointed to the board of the National Arts Centre for a three-year term. Mr. Martella has been in the restaurant business in the Toronto area for more than a decade. He has served on many boards including the Canadian Opera Company, the Institute of Contemporary Culture (Royal Ontario Museum) and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Pat Beck, of Saskatoon, has been appointed to the board of the Canadian Museum of Nature for a three-year term. She is President of the Board of Directors of the Saskatoon Centennial Auditorium and has been a member of the Saskatchewan Advisory Committee which advises the federal government concerning grant allocation to provincial environmental groups.

Marianna Simeone, of Montreal, has been appointed to the board of the Canadian Museum of Civilization for a three-year term. She is the Executive Director of the Montreal Italian Chamber of Commerce. She was the host of Italian Magazine on the CTV network. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Santa Cabrini Hospital in Montreal.

Claudette Roy, of Edmonton, has been promoted to the position of Vice-Chair of the board of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, of which she has been a trustee since 1995. The appointment is for a three-year term. Ms. Roy has been involved in various organizations; she has been treasurer of the Fédération des parents francophones de l'Alberta, student representative of the Newman Theological College Senate, and secretary-treasurer of the Fédération des Scouts et Guides de l'Ouest.
