Minister of Canadian Heritage Announces the Return of François Macerola as the Head of Telefilm Canada

OTTAWA, January 4, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps announced today that François Macerola will return to his duties as the Executive Director of Telefilm Canada for a term of two years.

"I am delighted that Mr. Macerola is returning to head up Telefilm Canada. As the new millennium approaches, the Canadian film and audiovisual industry is facing new challenges which will have considerable impact on its future," said Minister Copps. "I am pleased to be able to count on someone with Mr. Macerola's experience, who has a successful track record as the former head of Telefilm Canada and has recognized expertise in the film world."

A graduate of the Université de Montréal, he joined the Quebec Bar in 1971. Mr. Macerola practised law and then served as an advisor to the president of the Lavalin Group in matters relating to film, television and communications. He has also served as the Government Film Commissioner and Chair of the National Film Board of Canada.

Mr. Macerola has had positions on the boards of several cultural organizations, including the Montreal Festival des films du monde, the National Arts Centre, the Montreal Conservatory of Cinematographic Art and the National Screen Institute.

"We welcome Mr. Macerola and wish him every success as the head of Telefilm Canada," Minister Copps concluded.
