Appointments to National Arts Centre and National Capital Commission Announced

OTTAWA, May 6, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, today announced the following appointments:

David S.R. Leighton, of Komoka, Ontario, has been appointed Chair of the National Arts Centre.Dr. Leighton is currently Nabisco Brands Professor Emeritus at the Richard Ivey School of Business Administration, University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Leighton was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He graduated from Queen's University and the Harvard Business School, and has honorary degrees from Queen's and the University of Windsor. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Western Ontario for more than 20 years, most recently as Director of the National Centre for Management Research and Development.

He served 13 years as President of the Banff Centre in Alberta, and in 1982, he was president and C.E.O. of the Organizing Committee for the Calgary Olympics. During his career, Dr. Leighton has served on 18 corporate boards, and is currently a director of five. In 1997, he co-authored with D.H. Thain the book Making Boards Work: What Directors Must Do To Make Canadian Boards Effective.

François Pichard, of Hull, Quebec, has been appointed member of the National Capital Commission. Mr. Pichard is a founding partner in the Accounting firm of Pichard, Laflamme, Potvin & Associés and has worked there since 1977. He is also President and a founding member of the consulting firm Pichard, Laflamme, Potvin & Compagnie Ltée.

Since 1995, he has been a member of the Board of the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport in Ottawa and he has been a member of a number of other Boards including the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Hull Olympiques Hockey Club and the Hull Kiwanis Club.
