Sheila Copps Announces Appointments to Boards

OTTAWA, September 30, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced appointments to boards of agencies which are part of her portfolio.

John R. English has been appointed Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museum of Civilization for a four-year term. Dr. English is currently a Professor at the University of Waterloo, where he has also served in various capacities such as lecturer, Associate Professor and Acting Chairperson throughout his career. He has been involved in many academic and professional activities including serving as the Member of Parliament for Kitchener from 1993 to 1997. He also served as a member of the Canadian Historical Association Program Committee, Vice-President of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, and as a panel member and assessor for various prizes and grants such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Research Grants Award Panel.

Dr. English has received a number of honours and awards, including the Macdonald Prize from the Canadian Historical Association and the Dafoe Prize. He is the author of the book Kitchener: An Illustrated History.

Robert Thomas Ross has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Gallery of Canada for a three-year term. Dr. Ross, an Order of Canada recipient, is a retired professor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, where he also served in various capacities, namely as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Neurosciences Subject Committee from 1978 to 1981 and member of the Faculty Executive Council, Faculty of Medicine since 1988. He is the author of a number of scientific papers.

Dr. Ross has served on the Boards of many professional organizations including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. He is a Board member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Patti Pacholek has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Museum of Science and Technology for a three-year term. Ms. Pacholek began her career as an associate lawyer with Balfour Ross, Lawyers and Solicitors. Since 1994, she has served as legal counsel for the Saskatchewan Securities Commission, Government of Saskatchewan.

Ms. Pacholek has been involved with the Canadian Cancer Society's Board of Directors in various capacities, including Chairperson of its Education Committee (Regina Unit). She also performs volunteer work for other professional and community organizations' Boards of Directors such as the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the Canadian Bar Association, the Regina International Children's Festival and the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society.
