Sheila Copps Announces Appointments to Boards

OTTAWA, November 17, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced appointments to boards of agencies which are part of her portfolio.

Roger Allan Soloman has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Museum of Science and Technology.

From 1964 to 1967, Mr. Soloman worked in various capacities at the Souris Regional High School, first as a teacher, then as Vice-Principal and later as Acting Principal. From 1967 to 1995, he worked as a math and science teacher, an administrator and later as the Principal of the Souris Consolidated Elementary School. Since 1983, Mr. Soloman has been the owner and operator of a seasonal family tourism business in Prince Edward Island.

Mr. Soloman has been involved on the boards of several professional and community organizations, including the Prince Edward Island Teacher's Federation Board of Governors, the Prince Edward Island Principal's Association, the Souris West Community Council and the Souris Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Luke Suluk has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, as the representative from Nunavut. From 1975 to 1993, Mr. Suluk worked as a Consultant and Researcher for various institutions and associations in Northern Canada. Some of his assignments consisted of collecting Inuit traditions and recording Inuit songs and legends, identifying historical and archaeological sites in the Arviat area and identifying the process to be used in land claims negotiations and community input.

Between 1993 and 1997, Mr. Suluk acted as Project Manager for the Arviat Historical Society. He planned and coordinated projects and programs for the preservation of local history and traditions, conducted archaeological research in the Arviat area and worked with Parks Canada in National Historical Site Designations at Arviat and Baker Lake. From 1994 to 1995, as Coordinator of Inuit Heritage Trust, he conducted archaeological research and consultations with researchers and the communities in Nunavut for the archaeological and ethnological provisions of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. He is currently with the Nunavut planning commission.
