Sheila Copps Reacts to Allegations Concerning an Air Transat Flight

OTTAWA, January 6, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps has commented on the allegations reported in the media concerning a flight on Air Transat, originating in St. John's, Newfoundland, which she, her husband and members of her family boarded on January 3.

"Allegations were made to the effect that my husband and I had refused to give up our seats to accommodate a person with a physical disability. That is completely false. If that had been the case and if we had been told about it, my husband and I would have immediately offered to give up our seats. I was dismayed to learn of these allegations, and I will take every means at my disposal, including legal action if necessary, to ensure that the facts and not falsehoods are reported. I have no further comments about these false allegations," said Minister Copps.
