Government of Canada Announces $10 Million for Terry Fox Humanitarian AwardsOTTAWA, May 31, 2006 - Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, has announced a $10 million investment in the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program's endowment fund."Our Government is proud to contribute to the long-term legacy of Terry Fox and to support young people who, like him, overcome personal difficulties and continue serving their communities," said Minister Oda. The funds will be used to increase the number of new award recipients and ensure that current recipients continue to receive their annual scholarships. Every year, the program enables over 80 young Canadians to pursue their dream of post-secondary education in Canada. Recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award demonstrate the highest ideals of citizenship and humanitarian involvement. The scholarships allow them to continue their volunteer work while pursuing their studies. The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program was established in 1982 with a $5 million grant from the Government of Canada to recognize Terry Fox's contribution to his country as an outstanding citizen, athlete, and humanitarian. Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage and is administered through its Canadian Studies Program. Funding announced today was built into the existing fiscal framework.
