The Honourable Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, Lieutenant Governor for New Brunswick, Minister of Labour Claudette Bradshaw and Robert Basque, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for New Brunswick, unveiled the finalist's poster today.

The second, third and fourth place winners were, respectively, Mylène Beaulieu, 15, of Grand Falls, Courtney Diotte, 7, of Moncton and Mélissa Caissie, 14, of Fair Isle. An honourable mention was awarded to Matthew Shepherd, 18, of Saint John.

Hillcrest School and École Beauséjour, in Moncton, were each awarded a computer for their 100% participation rate.

An initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the 2000 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under. More than 1,900 students in the province of New Brunswick participated in the Challenge. The theme of the Challenge was "Canada: The Place to Be!" Nationally, 19,000 posters were submitted to the Challenge.

"I am proud to see the enthusiasm young Canadians have for this great country," said the Honourable Trenholme Counsell. "For them to share with us the images they have of Canada, through posters, is impressive and enriching."

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day Poster to be distributed across the country. Ms. Keehn, along with the other finalists and their guardian will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa, on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
