The Government of Canada is Proud to Support the 22nd Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

MONTRÉAL, June 28, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps and Minister of National Revenue and Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada) Martin Cauchon today announced financial assistance of $1,575,000 for the 22nd Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, to be held from June 28 to July 8.

"In keeping with its tradition of excellence, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is offering a program centred on discovery and delight," noted Minister Copps. "The profusion of talent will enable thousands of spectators from at home and abroad to celebrate the remarkable diversity of jazz at its best. The 22nd Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is presenting a wide variety of performances, which will afford Canadians an opportunity to discover diverse cultural perspectives."

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing funding of $75,000 for this year's Festival, under its Cultural Initiatives Program.

"I am very pleased to announce a $1.5 million contribution over three years from the Economic Development Agency of Canada to the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal," said Minister Cauchon. "By positioning Montréal as a hub for all forms of jazz, the Festival is an invaluable tourist attraction for the area."

The Government of Canada is proud to support this major international event, which contributes to Canada's cultural development. The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is a musical rendezvous par excellence for jazz buffs everywhere.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
