CALGARY, December 6, 2002 -- Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-West, Anne McLellan, today announced, on behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps, funding of $109,904 to the publishing house Fifth House Ltd.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to recognize the efforts and activities of this publishing house," said Minister McLellan. "Fifth House publishes quality works which reflect our cultural diversity and help readers discover the people, history and customs of Western Canada."

Established in Calgary in 1982, Fifth House specializes in general interest books that focus on various aspects of Western Canada. The company's catalogue has more than 110 titles.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this financial assistance through the Aid to Publishers and the Support for the Canadian Book Industry Supply Chain Initiative components of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP).

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
