Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Publishing House Animal Hebdo

ÎLE PERROT, February 10, 2003 -- Nick Discepola, Member of Parliament (Vaudreuil--Soulange), on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $80,000 for the Île Perrot publishing house Animal Hebdo, to help finance Magazine Animal. This support will help create awareness of the magazine, developing its readership and increasing its advertizing sales.

"Canadian magazines must reflect the interests of their communities. Domestic animals are part of the daily reality of many Canadians," said Mr. Discepola. "This support will help this young magazine increase its visibility and consolidate its financial viability by attracting new readers and advertisers."

Since its beginnings in April 1998, the objective of Magazine Animal has been to inform the general public on everything pertaining to domestic animals and includes Internet addresses, classified ads, news reports, experiences, and unusual topics from the fascinating world of animals.

The Department of Canadian Heritage provides this financial assistance as part of the Support for Business Development for Small Magazine Publishers component of the Canada Magazine Fund program. The objective of this program is to support the establishment of small dynamic and viable publishing houses in order to ensure Canadians with a choice of high-quality Canadian magazines.

Funding for this program was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
