Minister Copps Recognizes National Acadian Day

August 15, 2003 -- "In June, Parliament officially declared August 15 to be National Acadian Day. It is an ideal opportunity for all of us to highlight the invaluable contributions of Acadians to building our country.

I was very pleased to see the Bill to declare National Acadian Day pass unanimously in the House of Commons and subsequently receive Royal Assent.

This national recognition represents a tremendously important step for all Acadians who, generation after generation, have played an important role in the evolution of our country, particularly by laying the foundations of dynamic communities, and by enriching our country's diversity with their language and culture.

From now on, August 15 will be recognized not only as a great Acadian holiday, but it will become a celebration for all of us across the country of Acadians' vitality, creativity, and spirit of innovation.

Next year, we will also take advantage of the 400th anniversary of Acadia to highlight the richness of our Acadian heritage. Acadia will be an integral part of Celebrate Canada! celebrations, the theme of which will be Acadia: First Dialogues Ñ the Meeting of Two Worlds."
