Government of Canada Supports Breton Books

SYDNEY, January 22, 2004 -- The Honourable Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament (Sydney Victoria), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $30,542 for Breton Books.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support this publisher's efforts to promote the literature and heritage of Cape Breton Island," said Mr. Eyking. "I wish to commend the Breton Books publishing house for its exceptional work in preserving the rich cultural tradition unique to Cape Breton."

Founded in 1988, Breton Books publishes works, in all genres, that are written by Cape Breton authors and showcase the history of the region. This funding will allow the publisher to continue developing its repertoire while increasing its marketing activities.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the
Aid to Publishers and Support for the Canadian Industry Supply Chain Initiative components of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP). The objective of the BPIDP is to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and
-controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
