Department of Canadian Heritage Helps Highlight the History of Lanaudière

SAINTE-FOY, February 9, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Hélène Chalifour Scherrer today announced funding of $25,000 for the Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS)'s Centre Urbanisation, Culture et Societé, to help finance its project on the history of the Lanaudière area.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that provide a better understanding of our country's evolution," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "This project highlights the entire history of Lanaudière, a part of our country that deserves to be better known by all Canadians."

The goal of the project is to publish a work about the economic and cultural history of the Lanaudière area, beginning with the Aboriginal inhabitants and continuing until the present day. This volume will be part of the historical series called Les régions du Québec, which details the often-misunderstood contributions of Aboriginal peoples, women, religion, the labour movement, and the agricultural sector throughout Quebec's history.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Studies program. This program supports the production of educational material aimed at all Canadians and focussed on neglected or under-researched areas of Canadian studies.

Funding for the Initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
