Government of Canada Supports Éditions Pierre Tisseyre and Écrits des Forges

SAINT-LAURENT, March 22, 2004 -- The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Member of Parliament (Saint-Laurent--Cartierville), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $80,509 for Éditions Pierre Tisseyre and $37,314 for Écrits des Forges.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the efforts of these publishers to offer high-quality publications at a competitive price," said Mr. Dion. "I would like to congratulate Éditions Pierre Tisseyre for giving Francophone authors from across the country the opportunity to thrive on the Canadian and international literary scenes. I also commend Écrits des Forges on more than 30 years of providing our poets with sound opportunities to express themselves."

Founded in 1947, Éditions Pierre Tisseyre publishes youth literature, novels, and essays for adults, as well as textbooks. The funding will allow the publishing company to increase their promotional activities and to implement initiatives to reduce their production costs in order to consolidate their market share.

Écrits des Forges has published poetry and essays in poetry exclusively since 1971. The funding will allow them to encourage emerging young poets by publishing their collections. In addition, the publishing house will continue to help these artists break into international markets.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Aid to Publishers component of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP). The objective of the BPIDP is to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
