New Brunswick Francophones and Francophiles are invited to the Salon du livre d'Edmundston

EDMUNDSTON, April 5, 2004 -- Dr. Jeannot Castonguay, Member of Parliament (Madawaska Restigouche), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the Government of Canada's participation in the success of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston.

"I would like to congratulate organizers of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston for their work over the last 19 years," said Dr. Castonguay. "This book fair represents a unique forum in the province for Canadian writers in general and Acadian authors in particular."

"The Government of Canada is proud to support this book fair, which gives New Brunswick Francophones and Francophiles access to a wide selection of books by Canadian writers," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "I am extremely pleased that, thanks to the efforts of organizers of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston, Canadian authors have the chance to reach audiences in a region that lies outside of larger centres."

The Salon du livre d'Edmundston will receive $25,000 to promote Canadian authors and books, as well as the joy of reading. At the book fair, readers will have the opportunity to meet some 60 authors, half of them Acadian. The Salon, which took place from April 1 to 4, also fosters exchanges among publishers, booksellers, and librarians, and gives the Francophone community access to books in their own language.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Aid to Industry and Associations component of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. This program is concerned mainly with expanding the presence and profile of works by Canadian authors.

Funding for this program was provided in the February 2003 federal Budget.
