Government of Canada Supports Seven Literary and Arts Magazines

TORONTO, November 9th, 2004 -- Minister of State (Families and Caregivers) and Member of Parliament (Trinity-Spadina) Tony Ianno, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced funding of $92,514 for seven arts and literary magazines published in Toronto. This funding will enable these publications to continue to offer their readers high quality coverage of what's happening on the arts and literature scene.

"The quality of these magazines is proof of the vitality of Toronto publishers," said Minister of State Ianno. "By giving us insights into the literary and artistic scenes of Toronto and Canada, and offering readers a variety of perspectives, these publications give us an opportunity to reflect on our world."

"Our magazines have a very special place in Canada's cultural mosaic. They enable us to share our knowledge, while showcasing the great talent of our artists," Minister Frulla added. "The Government of Canada is committed to fostering the development of magazines that contribute to raising awareness of arts and literature in this country. This funding is a reflection of that commitment."

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this funding through the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component of the Canada Magazine Fund.

This funding was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
