Government of Canada Supports Liaison Magazine

OTTAWA, March 9, 2005 -- Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (Ottawa-Vanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $21,898 in funding for Liaison Magazine. This funding will enable the publication to continue to offer its readers high quality coverage of the Franco-Ontarian arts scene.

"This high-quality magazine, which focuses exclusively on Franco-Ontarian culture, represents a valuable resource for raising the profile of our local artists," said Mr. Bélanger. "I want to congratulate the team at Liaison for the originality and the relevance of the topics they cover and the debates they engender. Through their excellent work, they succeed in capturing the spirit of artistic and literary creativity of our community."

"Canadian magazines have a very special place in our country's cultural mosaic. They enable us to share our knowledge and our opinions on a wide range of subjects, and are a reflection of the talent of our artists," Minister Frulla added. "I am very pleased that our government is able to play a role in helping to maintain and showcase magazines like Liaison, which do so much to recognize this country's artists and writers."

For more than 20 years, Liaison has been covering the literary, musical, theatrical and film works produced by Francophone Ontario's professional artists. By helping to reduce production and editorial costs, the funding announced today will enable the publisher, Éditions Interligne, to take steps to raise awareness of the magazine, and pursue its efforts to promote arts and literature in Canada.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this funding through the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component of the Canada Magazine Fund.

The funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
